The WCPF’s Kate Rae and Dr Anna Jemmett have contributed an article to Issue 8 of Caravanserai, the official magazine of the Royal Society for Asian Affairs (RSAA).

Think ‘camel in Asia’ and you probably imagine the two humped Bactrian Camel. For centuries these amazing ‘ships of the desert’ carried bolts of silk and luxury goods along the Silk Road. Even today you can find the remains of the many Caravanserai along this road where the camels and their drivers rested overnight. Bactrians are not only long-distance haulers on the silk road, but also daily beasts of burden. The Bactrians are domesticated, they are ridden, they help to move the ‘gers’, the traditional homes of the nomadic herders, and they provide milk, meat and wool.
