2023 celebrates 60 years of cooperation between Mongolia and the United Kingdom. The British government was the first Western government on the 23rd January 1963 to recognise Mongolia as an independent country. The wild camel project in Mongolia since the 1990s is an example of this successful cooperation.
After the recent COP meeting in Glasgow in 2022 the Mongolian President Khürelsükh Ukhnaa announced the One Billion Trees project in Mongolia. Mongolia will by 2030 plant one billion trees in the country . While this is part of the country’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals it is also to combat desertification, deforestation and food security.
WCPF will support this Mongolian tree planting project by working with the two Soums where the captive breeding centres are situated to assist in the planting of 22,000 seedlings.
WCPF is already supporting and co-funding with the Yak-Camel Foundation a tree planting project in the Toli Soum.
And in July 2024, the International Year of the Camel, the WCPF will celebrate this year with joint events in London with the Mongolian Embassy.
