Happy New Year!
It has been a tough last twelve months. And almost a year since John Hare passed.
However I am very pleased to say the wild camels are doing well. Four wild camel calves were born last Spring and we are expecting more wild camel calves this March. Knowsley Vets visited to ear tag and record them and check the health of the other wild camels in the breeding centre.
The second breeding centre was delayed due to the Chinese border being closed due to Covid. It was not possible to purchase the construction materials and transport them to Mongolia. However we are hoping this will be possible this year.
The WCPF staff in Mongolia have been working incredibly hard as well as the UK volunteers. And the scientists advising WCPF have been very helpful ensuring the wild camel breeding centre complies with the international IUCN standards for breeding centres.
We are extremely grateful for the strong support WCPF has had from Zoos worldwide .
The Mongolian Environmental Education schools program near the existing breeding centre will start again this year. Booklets were printed thanks to the generous financial support of two Zoos – Helsinki and Amsterdam.
Anna Jemmett will complete the first wild camel PhD this autumn. John Hare would be so pleased. The first wild camel PhD in the world.
There are now two more Trustees who will help with funding raising and the management of the work of the Foundation.
As the other Cofounder I am confident that with your continuing support and encouragement WCPF will continue to protect the wild camel and its rare habitat.
Thank you.
Warmest wishes
