Wild camels mate during December and January at the very coldest time of year both at the WCPF breeding centre in Mongolia and in their Gobi desert habitat in China and Mongolia.
John Hare, Chairman of WCPF, has undertaken numerous expeditions into the Mongolian and Chinese Gobi Deserts to observe wild camels, but he had never been there in the cold to observe the unusual wild camels’ mating displays. In January 2019, he travelled to the WCPF breeding centre at Zakhyn Us and managed to take some revealing photos in a temperature of – 32 Celsius. The alpha male bull camel is clearly fully in command, not quite the same could be said for John Hare.
