The Wild
Camel Protection Foundation has been established to raise funds to protect
the critically endangered wild Bactrian camel in its habitat in North-west
China. There are approximately 900 left in the world and it is more endangered
than the giant Panda. The Foundation with the approval of the Chinese government
has established the Xinjiang Lop Nur Wild Camel Nature Reserve in the Gobi
desert.
The aim
of the Reserve is to protect the wild Bactrian camel and the unique desert
eco-system in which it lives. The Chinese government has agreed to fund
the annual running costs provided that the capital costs can be raised.
The Reserve will also act as a pilot scheme for the Jane Goodall Institute's,
Roots and Shoots environmental awareness-raising campaign throughout China.
