The Wild Camel Protection Foundation, a United Kingdom registered charity number 1068706, is fund-raising for its programme of activities in China and Mongolia which aim to protect the IUCN listed, critically endangered wild Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus ferus) in its unique desert habitat.
During March and April 2006, as part of the fund-raising activities, the founder and chairman of the WCPF, John Hare FRGS walked around Lake Turkana in Kenya with 20 camels together with Josh Perret, the grandson of Jasper Evans, a WCPF co-trustee. This 450-mile trip took six weeks and in the process crossed the river Omo where it flows out of Ethiopia and into the lake. No-one has travelled right around Lake Turkana with camels before. Members were invited to sponsor John Hare on a per mile basis or for the whole trip.
The proceeds raised are being be used to fund the wild Bactrian camel breeding programme at Zakyn Us, Mongolia and our educational work in both China and Mongolia.
